First Friday Art Walk – May 3, 2013

Viewing Ron Flier’s meticulous conté drawings brings to life the blood, sweat, and tears of Topeka’s formative industrial years. Architecture and roadways, the foundation of our capital city, tell their stories through the stark contrasts created by Flier’s medium, conté crayon. The waxy charcoal substance demonstrates a great advantage over other mediums in producing high contrast black and white, an element the artist has pushed to its limit.

Topeka in Black & White opens at Soho on Friday, May 3rd in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk; the artist will discuss the collection and answer questions at 7:00 p.m. Art Walk hours 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Join us this First Friday of April to hear from our featured artist, Eliza Bullock, whose abstract monotypes are sure to uniquely capture each viewer. From New York to San Francisco, Florence, Italy to Lawrence, KS, Bullock’s vast experience now inspires the Midwest. Eliza will discuss her exquisite collection, “works on paper,” and live music will be provided by Sam Raymer.

Artist Bio-
Eliza was born and raised in New York City, and received her BFA in Graphic Design from Ohio University. She began her career as a graphic designer and art director in San Francisco. While working in the publishing industry, she yearned to get back to her fine art roots and to create things by hand that had a more tactile, textural quality. In 2000 she enrolled in a series of monotype classes and workshops in San Francisco and began learning her craft.

In 2002 she took an opportunity to take some time off and moved to Florence, Italy. There she participated in an intensive monotype workshop, further developing her skills and passion for printmaking. After returning to the United States, she got back into the design field, got married and had two children. It wasn’t until moving to Lawrence, KS in 2009 that her art making was able to become more of a focus. Now her work can be seen in galleries and in private and corporate collections around the country.

my process-
My printmaking process is very fluid. I don’t usually know what I am going to create until I begin working. It is then that my conversation with the work begins. At times it is a brief, cordial exchange and at others a long, heated debate. It is this dynamic back-and-forth dialogue that propels my work. Each piece begins fast and furious but then undoubtedly heads into a more deliberate and delicate process as the piece approaches resolution.I believe each piece should offer the viewer an ever-changing experience that presents something new with each view. It is my hope that my work speaks to the viewer on a very personal level and that it connects with their deepest emotions, as it does for me.
-Eliza Bullock

Christine McCloud’s love of art began with early “crayon sketches” on her Noah’s Ark wallpaper in here parent’s southern California bungalow when she was just two years old. Her mom and dad, Bill and Millie were rightly impressed, and since then she’s never stopped being a colorful person.

Chris creates in watercolor, oil pastels and acrylic. She also captures the world around without a brush. She uses a lens.
Chris leads workshops on releasing the creative Spirit whenever she is asked. She and her husband, John (our most recently previous featured artist) have traveled the world to capture God’s handiwork.

Come by Soho Interiors to experience the color, laughter, love, and life seen through Chris’ eyes.

$39.00
It should only take you a fraction of the time to order this incredible slice of a grandfather clock. Designed by Rob Price this clock always grabs the eye as a simple distortion of a familiar image creating an unusually splendid spectacle. More than a novelty item this clock looks great anywhere.

Glow in the Dark Moon Clock
$40.00
We can’t decide if the Glow in the Dark Moon clock makes a room look more romantic or like science nerd central. Two very different concepts. We do think it’s a cool piece of art for the wall.
The face is an image mash-up of 65 different actual photographs of the moon. A round domed glass front is a nice detail. The clock face glows for 2 hours after lights are off.

This Friday, 5:30-8:30, we are hosting the student artists of Topeka West High School. Freshmen of Mr. Neal Barbour’s Intro to Design class have provided a stellar collection of self-portraits turned Pop Art faces. The students engaged the project full on and pushed the medium of colored pencil to its capacity: many achieved a strong realism amid saturated color and abstract form. Meet many of the 42 students represented at this, their first art show. Live music performed by Lucas Whippo.

Also on display are oil & mixed media by Ron Flier, watercolor by Mack Schroer, graphite & mixed media by Traci Osborn, photography by Brandy Eckhardt & VisioPhoto.
