First Friday Art Walk: from KC Art Institute, Shannon Deatrick

Join us this Friday! March 3rd, 5:30-8:30

“You should slow down” is rare advice for students. I recently found myself bogged down by a tedious daily routine, but when that regime was interrupted by moments of appreciation, I began to recognize the beauty disguised within the ordinary. The anecdote to overwhelming demands and expectations is not procrastination or guilt, but the simplicity of addressing where your focus lies.

This body of work is driven by my exploration of figure and space as still life, and how situation produces empathy within the viewer. By accessing a greater understanding of my daily environment through the manipulation of color, light, and composition, my audience may ultimately discover a personal sense of curiosity and belonging. It’s my responsibility to slow down and unveil the distinct authenticity within the regular, and it’s my privilege to share that perspective with others.

Shannon Deatrick was born in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating high school in Waukee, Iowa, she moved to Missouri to pursue painting at the Kansas City Art Institute, where she currently studies. She works primarily in oil, and is heavily influenced by environment and relationship. Deatrick’s interest in advocacy has nurtured a value of vulnerability, and cultivated a search for reciprocal empathy and connection through her work and daily life.

Capturing Movement & Color

First Friday Art Walk – October 7 – 5:30 to 8:30
Featuring oil paintings of artist Beverly Dodge Radefeld.

“Topeka and Kansas is a wonderful place for an artist – wide open spaces and smaller comfortable cities. I love to paint the wide open spaces…the simple shapes of the Flint Hills and the color of the open sky. My paintings have been the vehicle for me to express these feelings and have allowed me to capture the movement and colors of the soft sculptures that I enjoy
